People in the United States

Population Size

With the great expansion of its territorial possessions in the nineteenth century, the United States created the large space and large resource base necessary to support one of the great agglomerations of people in the world. The U.S. population grew from 4 million in 1790 to 23 million in 1850, 76 million in 1900, 151 million in 1950, 281 million in 2000, and 314 million by 2012. Such numbers have provided the United States with a substantial supply of labor to drive a continuously expanding economy and a vast consumer market. Immigrants and their descendants are largely responsible for the spectacular growth of the U.S. population, underscoring the fact that the United States has long been the land of opportunity for people throughout the world. The ability of the United States to absorb wave upon wave of immigration from abroad is demonstrated by the historical record. Between 1820 and 2000 an astounding 66 million legal immigrants entered the United States, with the years 1880 to 1920 and 1960 to 2000 constituting the two periods of greatest influx.1 More than 23 million immigrants arrived during the period 1880 to 1920 and over 24 million immigrants arrived during the period 1960 to 2000.

The size of the U.S. population has harmonized well with the nation’s economic and social needs, assuring continuous growth and rising prosperity over the generations.
